Comunicats de la Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig)

Comunicat 04-05-2020

Dear partners,

We would like to give you an update on the situation at HTWK Leipzig. Our Rectorate has decided that the university will slowly start to reopen on 4 May 2020 but that the summer semester will mainly remain a digital semester.

Online courses

The online courses that have already started will continue online. The responsible professors will inform their students if there are any changes. Only students taking part in practical classes and labs which cannot be held online will be able to return to campus within the next weeks.

Exams

There is no definite decision yet on how the exams at the end of the semester will be carried out. The responsible colleagues at the faculties are currently working on finding a solution. They will inform the students about the exam regulations for their courses. If students have to come to HTWK Leipzig for an exam and are unable to do so because they are outside of Germany, they are asked to inform Ms Franziska Schmidt (franziska.schmidt@htwk-leipzig.de) at our International Office immediately.

Facilities

The library, the computer pools, the student cafeterias and dining halls (Mensa) will remain closed until further notice. The HTWK gym is closed as well and all sports courses are put on hold.

Quarantine

According to the regulations issued by the Free State of Saxony (valid until 20 May 2020), all students and staff who return to Saxony from outside of Germany have to go to their living apartment immediately and self-quarantine for 14 days.

Nomination and application deadlines

Our extended nomination and application deadlines for exchange studies during the winter semester 2020/2021 (October – March) are as follows:

Nomination deadline: 15 June 2020

Application deadline: 30 June 2020

Please be aware that we are accepting applications for the next winter semester 2020/2021 (October – March), but it depends on the future developments regarding COVID-19 whether or not we will be able to return to operate as normal in the winter semester and take up classroom teaching again.

International Office

There are currently no face-to-face consultations at our International Office. We continue to be available favorably by phone during our updated office hours or by email. If students need to speak with us in person, we kindly ask them to contact us by phone or email to set up an appointment.

We will keep in close contact with all incoming students and staff. We will inform them about these and any further changes. If needed, we will be glad to assist your students and staff to reschedule their mobility to a later time.

Thank you kindly for your ongoing cooperation and understanding. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

Silke Mühl

Dear partners

We are contacting you today with the latest information on how HTWK Leipzig is dealing with the challenges due to the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19 caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2).

As of today, there are 1328 confirmed cases in Germany. Regrettably, the outbreak has reached the state of Saxony with 24 cases confirmed, 4 of them in Leipzig. As you are well aware, the situation is unforeseeable and may change every day. For the moment, HTWK Leipzig has not been affected so far. We continue to operate as normal and we expect to begin the lecture period of our upcoming summer semester on 6 April 2020 as scheduled.

In dealing with the current challenges, the university has advised all students and staff to follow the advice and guidelines of international, national, regional and local authorities (World Health Organization, European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, German Ministry of Health, Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Robert Koch Institute, Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs and Social Cohesion). The HTWK Leipzig Rectorate has formed a contingency management team that is closely monitoring the situation and determines appropriate actions. The university is taking full measures to adapt to the new situation caused by the coronavirus outbreak and please be assured that the well-being of our students and staff remains our top-priority.

We are prepared to take all necessary measures to safeguard our incoming students and staff. Thus, the university Rectorate has decided today to cancel the introduction course “German Language and Culture” (16 March – 3 April 2020) as a measure of precaution. Should your students be affected, we sincerely regret to inform you about this and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We will keep in close contact with all incoming students and staff. We will inform them in the event of any changes. If needed, we will be glad to assist your students and staff to reschedule their mobility to a following semester. Practical advice and further information on the coronavirus is available in English at the following links by the German Ministry of Health:

We would be grateful if you could kindly provide our outgoing students and staff with similar information and instruction provided by your university and government authorities.

Thank you kindly for your cooperation and understanding. If you have any concerns or further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

Silke Mühl
