A tandem, or tandem learning, means the regular exchange of conversation between language learners at the Universitat Jaume I, which can include any members of the university community - students, administrative and services staff (PAS) and teaching and research staff (PDI).
Tandem learning makes it easier to achieve greater oral proficiency and fluency in the language being learnt. It also allows students and visitors from outside the area where our language is spoken (i.e. foreigners or those from other parts of Spain) to become more familiar with the sociolinguistic and cultural situation at our University.
Tandem for understanding and speaking.
If you are interested in practising your oral skills in a foreign language and you have an intermediate or advanced level of proficiency in Spanish or in Catalan, whether your level in the language you want to learn is high or low, you can still take part in an exchange with students and visitors from other places who want to learn to speak or to practise either of our official languages.
Tandem for understanding.
If you are a beginner and you don't speak the language you want to learn, you can arrange an exchange in which, to begin with, each partner only uses his or her own language.
Foreign students interested in participating in this activity have to fill in an application form (with their personal details and language/s offered in exchange) and bring it to the self-access language centre (CAL). (formulari)
Access to this information will be restricted to members of the UJI. Once identified (username and password), any member can choose a tandem partner and arrange a first meeting in order to establish a timetable and set out a number of guidelines to help the tandem run as smoothly as possible.
The CAL also offers learners the chance to attend training sessions where they are given resources to help develop the tandem. However, it is not possible to guarantee that everyone can find a tandem partner
