The conference entitled “Regional knowledge ecosystems: the future of innovative economies”, presented by Anthony Townsend, research director at the Institute for the Future of the University of Palo Alto, California, focused on how the science and technology parks will face and adapt to a changing future characterised by the most sophisticated development plans for university research marketing. In the conference on 8 May 2009, Townsend announced some news from the Institute for Future about the study of the Research Triangle Park, which will be published in June 2009 at the world conference to be held in Raleigh, North Carolina. Trends to reform the science parks framework in the next ten, twenty and fifty years will also be presented at this world conference.

The conference, organised by Espaitec, the Science and Technology Park at the Universitat Jaume I, lasted about one hour and was followed by a round of questions in which participants exchanged views with the lecturer.

The IFTF is an independent, non-profit research group with over 40 years of forecasting experience. The core of its work is identifying emerging trends and discontinuities which will transform global society and the global marketplace. It also provides insights into business strategy, design processes, innovation and social dilemmas.

During the last half century of development and growth, science and technology parks have evolved from the concept of simple urban development to more sophisticated development plans for university research marketing. However, changes in science, technology and innovation areas will be even more significant in the next fifty years as they will involve not only support strategies to business clusters but also strategies dealing with regional knowledge ecosystems.
