You must have medical insurance to enrol at the University and you are responsible for ensuring you arrive with adequate medical cover; if this is not the case you will encounter a number of difficulties when seeking health care and when it comes to having health care expenses refunded.
How to get medical insurance
Students from the European Union, from the European Economic Area or who benefit from an agreement with the Social Security
In order to receive health care in a Social Security medical centre, before leaving for Spain you will have to ask for Form E-128 for complete study and work periods. Once in Spain, if you should need medical attention, you will have to go to the nearest clinic or health centre to your place of residence and hand in Form E-111 or E-128 (original and a photocopy).
The cost of dental treatment is not usually included in these agreements.
Students from outside the EU and from countries with no bilateral agreement, or who have private insurance cover
These students will be subject to the regulations in their home country and they will have to take out their own private medical insurance. Before travelling they will have to make sure their insurance company has a subsidiary or office in Spain that will cover medical expenses. If possible it should be one of those mentioned below. The best known medical companies in Spain are Sanitas, Adeslas, Asisa, Previasa and Caja Salud and all of them have branches in Castelló. When they need medical treatment they can go to a private doctor from the Spanish company with their private insurance card and the doctor will send the bill to the insurance company.
The University has an agreement with Asisa, Adeslas and Previasa which allows its members to be attended in the University Health Centre in cases of regular general visits.
Students with the School Insurance
This insurance covers the cost of health care deriving from accidents while studying.
Spanish students under the age of 28 and all Latin American, Portuguese, Andorran, Filipino, Brazilian, Syrian, Jordanian, Iraqi, Moroccan, Guinean, Greek, English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish, French, German, Dutch, Swedish and Finnish students under the age of 28 take out school insurance when they enrol in the University. This costs about 2.50 euros and covers the cost of medical assistance as a result of accidents suffered while studying.
This is taken to mean any bodily harm suffered by the policy-holder during the course of activities that are directly or indirectly related to their being a student, which includes practising sports and study, practice or end of year trips, and other similar activities, provided that they have been arranged or authorized by the University.
This School Insurance is arranged by the INSS (Spanish National Health Service) (Avda. del Mar, 21).
