    Welcome from the Rector

    Rector WELCOME TO UJI

My name is Vicent Climent and I am the Rector of Universitat Jaume I in Castelló. I would like you to know who I am and where to find me as we are going to be together for a while and I am sure we are also going to need each other at some time or another.

Our job here at Universitat Jaume I is to further your education, both intellectually and professionally, as well as we can, and the main commitment of both our teaching and administrative staff is to achieve that objective. But we would also like your stay at the UJI to be a fundamental experience in your education as a person.

Whether this is your first time at university or whether you have decided to take your higher education a step further, you are about to begin a new stage in your life that will be quite different from what you have experienced until now. It will not only be new from the point of view of your education but also as regards the new framework of personal relations that anyone faces at a modern-day university. As you begin this new stage in your education, I want to assure you that here at the UJI there are many people who are going to do everything they can to help make your stay here as fruitful and rewarding as possible.

During the time you spend with us you are going to acquire a huge amount of knowledge and information that will prepare you for your future career. I like to think that, on leaving our University, you will also be taking with you a series of values that will complement those you have undoubtedly received from your family and local community, as well as from your own experience of life. One of the aims of this Guide, as well as welcoming you to our university, is to put across to you the values of our corporate culture; that is, the basic principles which we share and believe in, and which provide basic guidance for our individual and collective behaviour at Universitat Jaume I.

Like the other public universities in Spain, by law our university enjoys a high level of autonomy. This means the UJI is, and will be in the future, what the people who work and study in it want it to be. From this very moment, I invite you to integrate yourself fully into our university life through the different participatory bodies. I also encourage you to express your opinions freely and to suggest initiatives that could improve our internal processes and, therefore, your education. So much has been achieved since our university was set up in 1991, but I would like to highlight one of the most recent achievements, the granting of the European Gold Seal of Excellence 500+ for the quality management we carry out in all spheres of activity, ranging from teaching and research to administration and culture. This recognition – the first award of its kind obtained by a Spanish university – has been granted to us by the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), an organisation of proven independence and international prestige. We are proud and satisfied to see such a reward for our efforts to construct the best possible university by and for each member of our university community, of which we hope you feel a full part.

Let’s all join together to make UJI a place where tolerance and understanding are vital features, a place that fosters the acquisition of knowledge and the free exchange of ideas, and where our best wishes – both yours and those of this young institution

    The Rector
