The hall of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Universitat Jaume I houses until the end of February the photographic exhibition "Hijas de la tierra," an exhibition about the status of women in today's society. It portrays the presence and struggle of women in the ‘Movimento dos trabalhadores Rurais dos Sem-Terra’ (MST) in Brazil. This initiative of ASIC-UJI (researchers’ association for co-development at Universitat Jaume I), with the sponsorship of Diputación Provincial (Castelló Provincial Government) and the support of the non-governmental association Ilêwasi, will also be shown in several towns of the province of Castelló.
The exhibition includes a series of photographs that portray the daily work and struggle of women belonging to MST in different rural settlements of the Brazilian state of Sergipe. It is a tribute to these women for the work they do as mothers, educators and activists, among other functions that are usually invisible to society. The images have been taken by the Brazilian photographer Marcio Garcéz Vieira, and the exhibition has been coordinated by the journalist Anderson Muniz.
The ‘Movimento dos trabalhadores Rurais dos Sem-Terra’, considered one of the largest and most representative organizations of Latin America, has been working for 26 years for agrarian reform, universal access to education and health, combating sexist violence, the democratization of communication and national and popular sovereignty, among other claims.
